General Usage Notes:
ChordNamer! v1.1 provides chord look up for those musicians who would rather read chord symbols than stacks of notes. 42 chord types are recognized--simply click the notes you want on the staff, play them to hear how they sound, and then have the program name it for you. ChordNamer returns a name or a list of names for the chord, if the chord can be named, and returns “Unknown” if ChordNamer! cannot name the chord. (Note: When “unknown” is returned, it doesn’t mean the chord doesn’t have a name, it just means ChordNamer! couldn’t name it with the 42 chord forms it knows...).
ChordNamer! v1.1 recognizes the following chords:
Major, Minor, Major 7th, Minor 7th, Dominant 7th, Major 9th, Minor 9th, Major 6/9, Minor 6/9, Major 6th, Minor 6th, Dominant 9th, Major 11th, Minor 11, Dominant 11th, Major 13th, Minor 13th, Dominant 13th, Major 7 - 5, Minor 7 - 5, Dominant 7 - 5, Major 7 + 5, Dominant 7 + 5, Dominant 7 - 9, Dominant 7 + 9, Diminished 7th, Augmented, Suspended 2nd, Suspended 4th, Dominant 7th suspended 4th, Dominant 9th suspended 4th, Dominant 7th suspended 2nd, Major add 9, Minor add 9, Minor/Major 7th, Major add 4, Minor add 4, Major (no 3rd), Dominant 9 + 11, Dominant 13 - 9, Major (no 5th), and Minor (no 5th).
Note that ChordNamer! will follow some of the rules guitarists do in naming chords, in that not all the steps in the chord must be included for a given chord. (For example, a guitarist often plays a Dominant 13th chord with only 4 notes--the Root, 3rd, 7th, and the 13th...
Known Problems
1. The QuickTime Musical Instruments occasionally do not initialize properly. You can sometimes get around this problem by selecting a new instrument (work with it until you get something to sound on the keyboard). Occasionally you may need to rerun the program. Apple calls this the Random-Instrument-Purging problem, and has a fix that will be released with QuickTime 2.2, which, at the time of this writing, is not yet released...
2. Refresh and editing on the staff window is primitive! You may need to CLEAR the staff now and then if you do a lot of editing!...
System Requirements:
This function requires a Macintosh with System 7.1 or higher and a 68020, 68030, 68040, or PowerPC processor. QuickTime with the QuickTime Musical Instruments extension is required for sound output.
